This year’s Men’s Golf Captain’s Prize, held at Clonakilty Golf Club over the June Bank Holiday, was an event to remember. Under the leadership of Captain Mr Liam Ryan, the tournament was a resounding success, blessed with glorious weather and impeccable organisation.
Glorious Weather and Perfect Conditions
The weather was spectacular throughout the weekend, with blue skies and warm temperatures creating ideal conditions for golf. The sunshine and gentle breezes added to the enjoyment, making it a delightful experience for both players and keen spectators.
Exceptional Catering
The food catering across the weekend was delicious and very well received by all in attendance. Goodie bags for all golfers playing helped them fuel and stay hydrated in the warm temperatures. Thanks to ALDI Clonakilty for the sponsorship of these goodie bags.
Competitive Play
Over 115 golfers participated in the qualifying rounds held on Friday and Saturday. A stiff breeze on Friday proved to be the more difficult side of the draw! The competition was fierce, with all players showcasing their skills and vying for a spot in the final playoff round. By Saturday evening, 36 golfers had emerged as finalists, ready to compete for the coveted Captain’s Prize on Sunday, where only 9 shots separated 1st to 36th heading into the final days playoff.
Course in Top Condition
The course at Clonakilty Golf Club was in fantastic condition, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the greenkeeping staff. The well maintained fairways and meticulous greens provided a perfect stage for the tournament. The players and organisers alike expressed their gratitude to the greenkeepers for their hard work throughout the week to get the course in great condition especially given the early season difficult weather conditions..
A Worthy Champion
After an exciting Sunday, where John O’Neill almost came from the back of the pack to take victory, it was Pascal Hayes, playing in the final group of the day that emerged as the overall winner of the 2024 Men’s Captain’s Prize. His performance was nothing short of impressive, displaying steady and skillful golf throughout the weekend. Congratulations to Pascal on his well-deserved victory and to all the prize winners who excelled in their respective categories.
